Instructions for Children Prior to Sedation
Eating and Drinking
No food or drinks that morning is preferred; however if it is necessary, then please limit their intake to white milk (not chocolate) and toast with butter. Juice and sugared cereals should be avoided as they can counteract the effectiveness of the sedating medications.
Change in Health
A change in your child's health, especially the development of a cold or fever, is extremely important. Please notify Dr. Gaddy if there is any change in your health status.
Medications
Prescription medications should be taken as scheduled with a sip of water unless otherwise noted by the Doctor. Please inform Dr. Gaddy of all the medications your child is currently taking and have taken within the last two weeks.
Clothing
On the day of surgery, it is suggested that they wear loose fitting clothing and comfortable shoes. Please remove nail polish. Contact lenses must be removed prior to sedation. Leave all valuables at home.
Post Sedation Instructions for Children
Pain or Fever
Drugs such as Children's Tylenol, Advil, or Motrin are usually effective for mild pain and fever that may follow their surgery and anesthesia. If you have concerns, call Dr. Gaddy.
Nausea and Vomiting
Although nausea and vomiting do sometimes occur after sedation, it is usually limited to 1 or 2 episodes. If this condition persists, they may need a prescription mediation. Please don't hesitate to call Dr. Gaddy if you think they may need medication for this condition
Emotional Changes
Following the detal procedure, your child may be very grumpy and fussy. They will also dislike the feeling of still being numb and this will cause them frustration. Please also watch your child closely for biting on their cheeks, lips or tongue. The traumatized tissues will be very sore once the anesthesia wears off.
Diet
Limit oral intake for the first 1 to 2 hours to clear liquids (water, Sprite, apple juice, Gatorade). If your child tolerates clear liquids, you may resume their regular diet when they are able unless otherwise directed by Dr. Gaddy.
Activities & School
Do not let your child engage in moderate to high physical activity for at least 12 hours and preferably 24 hours following their procedure. The child will miss school for that day but should be fine for the next day.
